Bone broth is becoming a growing segment of the dog food, treat and health markets. Jaffee’s Bone Broth is a startup that focuses on gut health, canine wellness and nutritional support.
Pet Age recently spoke with Elliott Jaffee, owner and founder of Jaffee’s, to learn how the brand is differentiating itself from other bone broth brands.
What inspired you to launch Jaffee’s Bone Broth in 2023?
Like all good stories, this one starts with a dog. In 2018 I adopted Nellie from a shelter in California. She was already 7 years old, her skin and fur were in terrible condition, and she had an extremely low chance of getting adopted. But I knew I could fix her.
For 15 years I had an integrative health practice (for humans), specializing in gut health and hormonal balance. I simply applied those same principles that had been healing my clients’ gut, skin and body, to Nellie. Six months later, her health was completely restored, and it really opened my eyes to the human-to-pet carryover for integrative health.
Fast forward a few years. Nellie had passed from cancer, and I adopted my rescue and soul dog, Jaffee. My full focus shifted from humans to dogs, and I felt like I had a new mission to share these methods with my fellow pet community.
Bone broth had played such a vital role in our house, so I started there. It started with making broth in my kitchen and bringing samples to friends at the dog park. And now we’re a nationwide company, helping pet parents everywhere restore their pets’ health naturally.
How does bone broth play a role in overall dog health?
There is a huge nutrient gap in most pet food: collagen. There is little (or none) of it in most commercial food, and it plays a huge role in our pets’ health. Collagen is the main building block of joint structures like bone, cartilage, and connective tissue. It’s a key component in skin, gut health, and even muscles.
Plus, bone broth supports numerous other systems, like detoxification and antioxidants. Bone broth provides that daily collagen to help maintain and optimize all these aspects of our dogs’ and cats’ health.
What sets your products apart from other bone broths?
We take pride in some particular aspects that set us apart from others. We are the only bone broth that include fully edible bone bits in every pouch. Even though they are cooked, our method makes them soft and mushy, so we put them back in the pouches for extra calcium, minerals, marrow and flavor.
Ingredient sourcing. We order directly from independent grass-fed free-range farms with organic practices. Things like soil quality and animal living conditions impact the nutrient profile of the final product, and we know the extra effort yields better results.
Novel protein flavors. We make bone broth from bison, elk, lamb, and wild boar. These hypoallergenic proteins offer dogs and cats exposure to other options they may not normally get.
Single-ingredient recipe. Our broth contains bones and water. And that’s it. No salt, fat, or fillers.
What is the range of products that make up Jaffee’s portfolio?
In addition to our pouches, we have our signature bone broth popsicles. Same broth, in a frozen enrichment push-pop. Our single-ingredient freeze-dried treats and toppers are nutrient dense and can be used to add a healthy flavor boost to meals. Picky eaters go crazy for them.
But by far, what we’re most proud of is our supplement line. BioBroth Complete is a powdered blend of bone broth, probiotics, and mushrooms that has been fixing issues like allergies, skin, itchy ears, upset tummy, and more.
BioStride is a comprehensive joint formula with patented ingredients that help rebuild cartilage, reduce pain and inflammation, and support overall longevity. Older dogs that have started to slow down are more active and playful on it. It speeds up recovery from an injury or surgery. And it helps prevent arthritis from developing in active or working dogs.
At Jaffee’s, our mission is to help your dog (or cat) live its healthiest and happiest life. We also do a lot of fostering and work with local rescues. So the more we grow, the more help we can provide to pets in need.
